ATLANTA – Georgia’s governor’s race has gotten a bit more crowded.
Channel 2, Richard Elliot, has confirmed that former Republican Senator David Perdue will run for Georgia governor, opposing current Republican Gov. Brian Kemp.
Perdue is expected to make the announcement on Monday and file her documents.
The news comes after Stacey Abrams announced on December 1 that she would run for governor again after failing in it 2018 match against Kemp.

Vernon Jones has already announced that he will also run against Kemp for governor in the Republican primary.
Channel 2’s Ashli Lincoln has spoken to political experts about what the announcement means for the Republican Party.
WSB-TV political analyst John Pruitt said a challenge to the incumbent Republican governor would lead to a disorderly political struggle within the Republican Party.
“It’s unprecedented, really,” said Pruitt. “On the side of the Republicans, they are going to be damaged. It’s going to be a tough campaign. So Stacey Abrams, of course the alleged Democratic candidate, sits on the sidelines, salivating at the thought of seeing her Republican opponents tear themselves apart in the primary.
Analyst Bill Crane said he believed Perdue was showing up after former President Donald Trump called him to challenge Kemp.
“This is the Republican Party, with a contested incumbent governor inside the party, fueled by a former president who will not give up on the fact that he lost the 2020 general election,” Crane said. “Which means the party will always fight among themselves. “
Kemp released a statement via a spokesperson on Sunday, saying:
“The man who lost Republicans in the United States Senate and caused runaway inflation, open borders, runaway government spending last year and awakened the culture of cancellation on the American people now wants to lose the office of the governor of Georgia for the benefit of the national face of the radical left movement. It may be difficult for David Perdue to see this beyond the gates of his coastal estate, but Joe Biden’s dangerous agenda hits hard-working Georgians in the wallet and puts their livelihoods at risk – and we all owe it to ourselves to David Perdue for that.
“The only reason Perdue is showing up is to appease his own battered ego, because his campaign for the US Senate failed to inspire voters at the polls – twice. Governor Kemp has a proven track record in fighting the radical left to put hard-working Georgians first, while Perdue is best known for dodging debates, beefing up his portfolio of stocks during a pandemic and losing winnable races. “
A spokesperson for Stacey Abrams issued a statement on her behalf, saying:
“While David Perdue and Brian Kemp fight, Stacey Abrams will fight for the people of Georgia. Kemp and Perdue would deprive 500,000 Georgians of health coverage that our taxpayers have already paid for. Both would continue to underfund our schools, the two would continue to divide Georgia and the two would continue to make reckless decisions that endangered the lives of Georgians during the pandemic. Only Stacey Abrams will lead to create One Georgia in which all of our employees, regardless of their zip code, their background, or their access to power, will have the opportunity to flourish. ”
Perdue’s spokesperson fought back, saying that if Kemp had fought Stacey Abrams as hard as he fights Perdue and Trump, he wouldn’t be in this mess.
“Trump has encouraged Perdue to come forward and will no doubt approve of it, so you will have this truly unprecedented conflict, and no one can be sure of the real outcome,” Pruitt said.

Vernon Jones also responded to the news in a statement, saying:
“Are we sure this isn’t an attempt to cover Kemp’s flank?” In addition to presenting Governor Kemp at the 2021 GOP convention in Georgia, Perdue recently proclaimed that we already have a Republican Governor. Brunswick News. It’s two peas in a pod! I am the only gubernatorial candidate who called for the elimination of state income taxes, a forensic audit of 159 counties, did not abandon President Trump or his first America / Georgia program , and can defeat socialist Stacey Abrams in the general election. “
Perdue served in the United States Senate from 2015 to 2021. He was defeated by Senator Jon Ossoff in the January second round.
Prior to entering politics, Perdue was CEO of Dollar General and Reebok, as well as a senior executive at companies such as Haggar Clothing and Sara Lee.
