Former US Senator and Indiana Governor Evan Bayh and former US Senator and Director of National Intelligence Daniel Coats will join IU, according to a press release from IU.
Bayh will work through the O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs and is made a distinguished scholar and senior executive. Coats will work at the Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies and is named a distinguished scholar and overall ambassador, the statement said.
The two will team up to support the Masters in International Business, a one-year joint degree shared by the O’Neill School and HLS.
Bayh served two terms as governor of Indiana from 1989 to 1997 and two terms as a United States Senator from 1999 to 2011. He served on several committees including the military, small business and entrepreneurship and Senate intelligence.
In the Senate, Bayh worked to seek consensus on reform of financial services and health care, the statement said. As governor of Indiana, he called for welfare reform.
Coats served as Indiana’s representative to the United States House of Representatives from 1981 to 1989 and to the United States Senate from 1989 to 1999 and 2011 to 2017. He served as Ambassador to Germany from 2001 to 2005, as well as Director national intelligence from 2017 to 2019.
Coats has served on several committees such as the Senate Armed Services Committee and the House Energy and Commerce Committee. According to the press release, he focused on issues of national security, healthcare, education and human resources in the Senate.
