TWICE THE PLEASURE

The Senators haven’t won back-to-back wins this season, so it would be the start of a great trend if they could clinch a win against the Avalanche. The last time these two teams met on Nov. 22 in Denver, the Avalanche scored a 7-5 victory in what turned out to be a crazy night. Winger Zach Sanford had a hat trick in this game for Ottawa, but goaltender Filip Gustavsson was not at his best and the result was a loss. Avalanche star Nathan MacKinnon was also out of the roster tonight, so tonight’s challenge will be more difficult.

THREE THINGS ABOUT AVS

1. If the Senators are to have any chance of success, they will have to stop the big guns on the Avalahcne, and there are a lot of guns. Nathan MacKinnon is back and has been a force against the Senators with five goals and 11 assists for 16 points in 14 career games. Former Leafs center Nazem Kadri, whom Ottawa has seen a lot over the years, has 14 goals and 12 assists for 26 points in 33 career games against the Senators.

2. The Avalanche just won a 4-1 victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday. Defenseman Erik Johnson played his 800th game in the NHL, while goaltender Jonas Johansson made 19 saves. He had allowed eight goals on 19 shots against the Toronto Maple Leafs earlier this week. Colorado is on a long road east that will continue with a contest on Monday in New York.

3. The last time the Senators faced the Avalanche, Darcy Kuemper was in the net for Colorado, but it won’t be this time around. He was injured during morning training in Toronto and is absent. There is no timeline for Kuemper’s return, so Colorado recalled Justus Annunen from their American Hockey League affiliate to dress as backup. He was the AHL goaltender of the month for November.
